Paper Collage Animal Art

 by Laura Barley

Hello! I’m Laura Barley (was Carter), an artist from Wakefield, West Yorkshire with a passion for wildlife and a love for working with paper collage. My textured animal portraits are made from all sorts of recycled paper, often wallpaper samples. Every tuft of fur, fold of skin, and even the tiniest whisker is carefully cut with scissors and layered by hand to bring each animal to life. I try to capture the unique features and personality of every creature in a tactile, detailed way that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

How is my artwork made?

Watch to see my process

First, I select the correct coloured pieces of paper from my extensive collection of found/recycled paper (mostly wallpaper samples) to match the animals that I’m making .

Then, I rip or cut the paper with scissors to make each piece of fur, feather or whisker and layer each piece up to create a tactile and textured piece of art.

Finally, any tiny details that cannot be captured using paper are added using fine-liner pens.
